Why You Should Not Be Ashamed of Mental Illnesses

“Normal health” is defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as “a state of physical and mental well-being…not just the absence of infirmity.” The word mental is crucial in this most celebrated, legal, and universal definition. It can therefore be easily discerned; why mental well-being is just as important as the physical  well-being, in deciding  the overall fitness of anyone who claims to have a normal state of health.

However, unlike annual physical checkups, yearly mental health screenings are not yet encouraged by insurance companies and policy makers. Still, it is the hope of Mental  health advocates at St. Lazarus  that Annual Mental Health and Substance Abuse Screens would one day be part of  yearly health  screening.

The World Health Organization sets aside a day every year (usually October 10-  as Mental Health Day) to  educate the world on Mental health and  further reduce the stigma of mental illness.

An Important Message From Our Child Advocacy Group

Like all other medical specialists and sub-specialists, not every doctor is trained to treat psychiatric problems in children. Thus, it is your legal and absolute parental responsibility to make sure that the doctor seeing your child is at least board-certified in that specific medical field.

If your child has ADHD, autism, bipolar depression, or any other behavioral difficulties, his or her doctor should additionally be trained to treat children. This doctor must also be board-certified in pediatric (child and adolescent) psychiatry.

To find out if your doctor is certified to see your child, click here and type in his or her first and last names. You should then be able to see if the psychiatrist is trained and certified in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Do not settle for less than the best for your own child.
